Dealing with Disappointment

Dealing with Disappointment

Have you ever had something happen to you that ruined your entire day, week, year? Maybe it was something small, you bought a brand new dress and saved it until that special occasion only to put it on while getting ready just to realize it didn’t fit? The time that you got dumped and didn’t see it coming. Or how about something bigger, like that pregnancy test you thought for sure would be positive… but wasn’t. The time that you lost your job, your house, or a child/spouse. Sometimes just a change in plans can ruin our mood or attitude. I want to focus on some things that can help get our minds get back on the Lord and His plan for us even when it seems like God has forgotten our feelings.

1. Believe God has a plan.

If we do, then we know that Gods got us! Even with the small stuff, God sees and knows our disappointments. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” God is thinking about us! He knows why He is sending disappointment our way and we must believe He has an end better than we could have planned ourselves.

2. Speak Your Disappointments.

That’s right, share what you’re going through with a friend or spouse. The Bible says in Galatians 6:2, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Sometimes we realize how trivial something really is or how someone else has been there and got through something similar just like us. Don’t forget you can always pour your heart out to the Lord.

3. Sit back and see the Lord move.

Give God a chance! Sometimes we try to fix our hurts so quickly that we don’t try to see how and why God would be working in that way. Is it hard? Yes! Does it take practice? Also, yes! Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and shall direct thy paths.” How are we acknowledging God? Are we reading His Word? Listening to music that will move us to worship and magnify Him? When we do this our troubles will seem smaller and smaller.

Our Heavenly Father understands our disappointment, suffering, pain, fear, and doubt. He is always there to encourage our hearts and help us understand that He’s sufficient for all our needs. When I accepted this as an absolute truth in my life, I found that my worrying stopped.
